Designing a Modern Elementary School Campus in Springfield!
Opportunity
Horsley Witten Group provided civil engineering services for the new DeBerry-Swan Elementary School in Springfield, Massachusetts. The three-story, 155,000-square-foot school brings together two neighborhood elementary schools and serves 800 K–12 students plus 120 pre-K students on a 5.9-acre site on Union Street.
Solution
Working with DiNisco Design Architects and Brown & Sardina Landscape Architects, HW supported the project from feasibility through construction. Our work included site design, utility connections, permitting support, cost estimating, and stormwater management design. The stormwater system features three large subsurface infiltration systems that manage rainwater onsite. Construction began in spring 2021, and students moved into the new school in September 2023.
